Casares is home to a diverse international community, with foreign nationals accounting for approximately one in three residents. British citizens form the largest overseas community, alongside residents from across Europe, Africa, the Americas and beyond.

The official municipal population figure for Casares was 9,009 residents as of 1 January 2025. The separate 2025 Annual Population Census recorded 8,984 residents, including 3,019 foreign nationals and 5,965 people with Spanish nationality. On that census basis, approximately 66.4% of residents were Spanish nationals and 33.6% held foreign nationality. The small difference between the two population totals reflects the separate statistical processes used for the municipal register and the annual census.

The population figures also provide useful context for local democracy. At the May 2023 municipal elections, Casares had 5,201 registered electors, of whom 3,241 voted, giving a turnout of approximately 62.3%. These are figures for that election and should not be treated as the current electoral roll.

British nationals were the largest foreign community, with 950 residents, representing around 31.5% of the foreign population and 10.6% of the municipality’s census population. Morocco followed with 264 residents, Belgium with 162, Italy with 143 and Romania with 123.

Other established communities included the Netherlands with 106 residents, Germany with 103, France with 100, Poland with 94 and Ireland with 84. There were also 79 Russian nationals, 73 Colombians, 71 Ukrainians, 60 Argentinians and 57 US nationals. Sweden, Cuba, Bulgaria, Portugal, Paraguay, Venezuela and Brazil were among the other nationalities represented. These figures describe nationality rather than birthplace, so residents born abroad who hold Spanish nationality are included in the Spanish population total.

This international population is part of a growing municipality. Official figures published through Andalucía’s statistical institute show that Casares’s population increased by 47.7% between 2014 and 2024. The 2025 figures also show an average age of 42.2 years, with 20.5% of residents aged under 20, reflecting a community that includes young families as well as older residents.

Foreign residents are not automatically registered to vote simply because they appear on the padrón. EU citizens must have declared their intention to vote in Spain, while citizens of countries with reciprocal voting agreements, including the United Kingdom, must satisfy the applicable conditions and registration requirements.

For EU residents wishing to vote in the 2027 municipal elections, the INE has confirmed a deadline of 30 December 2026 to complete the necessary registration and declaration. With foreign nationals making up such a substantial share of Casares’s community, checking electoral registration is an important step for eligible residents who want a say in the municipality’s future.
